39,695 Pounds and Counting — Maine Students Set a Record for Good Shepherd Food Bank

Thirty-nine thousand, six hundred ninety-five pounds of food. That's what students at Freeport High School raised for the WGME CBS 13 School Spirit Challenge — the single largest haul of the season, and enough on its own to be remarkable.

But Freeport wasn't alone. Students and faculty at Mt. Blue High School, St. Dom's, Massabesic High School, Bonny Eagle High School, Traip Academy, Portland High School, and Oceanside High School all took part, and together the eight schools raised more than 140,000 pounds of food — the largest single food donation in Good Shepherd Food Bank's history.

Good Shepherd Food Bank's mission is simple: make sure Maine people who need food can get it. Since 1981 the organization has grown into the state's largest hunger-relief network, and a single season of high school spirit competitions just became one of its biggest donations ever.

Quirk Chevrolet of Portland was proud to sponsor the WGME School Spirit Challenge and the young people across Maine who made it happen. A special thanks to WGME's Jeff Peterson, who worked with the students all season to make the challenge a success.

Eight Maine high schools, one food drive, and 140,000 pounds of food — the largest single donation in Good Shepherd Food Bank's history, raised entirely by students.
